Thyroid, hypo
Hypothyroidism is a condition associated with lowered activity of the thyroid gland. It may be due to a specific disease, as in Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, abnormalities with the pitutiary gland which controls the thyroid, or inflammation or irradiation of the thyroid gland. A dietary deficiency of iodine can also lead to hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is diagnosed based on blood tests of hormone levels and managed with supplementary hormones under a physician’s advice.
Treatment Plan for Thyroid, hypo
If lowered thyroid function is due to an iodine deficiency, add sea vegetables, and especially bladderwrack to the diet. The only thyroid-stimulating herb described in the available literature is guggul, but there is little clinical experience with it in hypothyroidism. General tonics for the immune system and hormonal system may be of benefit.
